Tēnā koe!
Week 7 has seen our hub space fill up with the remaining Year 3s who were in Koru, creating a hub with well over 100 students. It certainly is a bubbling hive of learning now and we are extremely impressed with how well everyone is settling in or continuing to learn as normal.
Winter sport has started at Rāwhiti Domain on Friday afternoons for the Year 5s which has already proved to be very popular.
Year 4s and 3s have a D.T. and art sessions led by Mr. Shields on Fridays.
Our Math learning with DMIC proves to engage and make learning a very positive experience no matter where learners are at in the journey. We hope we see many of you during the opening session on Wednesday the 15th from 2pm.

Start of Term 2 and we are powering on in learning already. New term also means new faces and not just students, we now have Mr Paul Shields teaching in H2.
Our focus this term is Keeping Ourselves Safe, we will be focusing on health and well being. Events related to this include basketball after school for some Year 5s, cross country with the school wide event on May 16th (wear house colours), Winter sports for Year 5s every Friday afternoon from week 5 through to term 3 and Pink Shirt Day.
By taking part in Pink Shirt Day we will be helping to stamp out bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting kindness and inclusion at school.
We are always focusing on kindness here, as our three routines are :
Be Kind to Ourselves
Be Kind to Others
Be Kind to our Environment

Swimming is over and we are now into a more regular learning routine which has got off to a flying start. I you would like to know more about what goes on in Harakeke, please check our parent information slide show we sent out through Hero.
We have started our learning around 'Water' and learners have selected a topic from choices of rivers, oceans, estuary, and connections to further their understanding. With current events, there is a range of learning journeys learners could go for, and if can add to their learning or answer any of their questions, please do!

Great to see everyone back at school, beaming with smiles and keen to get back into routines even though the weather has been super hot! On that note, please remind your child to drink water and wear their sunhat outside.
Harakeke has started fantastically, with getting to know me and learning about each other activities, which we to create positive relationships in our space and create a positive learning environment for everyone. This also reinforces our whakataukī and expectations that we set for the year also.

Thanks team Harakeke for a great year. We have all enjoyed being together in learning and sharing experiences all year. Have a great summer holiday, stay safe and see you next year. For those leaving we wish you all the best on your learning journey. Thank you.
Thursday 1st December
As part of our 'Giving Back' inquiry focus this term, Harakeke had a guest speaker, Corinne, from the City Mission to talk about how they give back to the community. All learners actively listened, connected with the information and asked great questions that reflected how much they cared about others and the amazing Sense of Community value City Mission show. City Mission is beginning their busy period of the year and shared the 3 most important things they need right now if people wish to give back; money, Christmas food (and just any food for boxes cans, packet food, drinks) and toys for families that can't really afford any.
Harakeke plans to go to Spencer Park next week for our 'Giving Back' to learn about sustaining our coast, we can't wait!

In Harakeke, everyone is doing the mahi for their business venture. We have done some Research and Development, begun the production of our goods to sell, marketing teams have started plans to promote their business and everyone is focused on working hard each block as they get wages in Christchurch East $$ to spend on market day! All the businesses are humming and are excited to make a profit come market day. Seeing some very business savvy learners out there already!
Tuesday 2nd August
Last Friday, Imagination Station with their Tech on Tour joined Harakeke to show us how to learn with Lego. Fantastic stuff! Lego components included some 'brains' and motors so they were able to be programmed from an up to complete commands and tasks based on what build the teams had chosen. Some of the quietest and focused team learning we have ever seen. This learning showed great Values and Learner Qualities been used at the same time and they really impressed the teachers and visitors.

Good to see everybody after our quick remote learning break, just happy to get back into learning at school. Just prior to that we had celebrated learning successes within the hub, highlighting the importance of regular learning with our literacy and math programs.
Also we have been working hard on our productions, representing some decades with music and dance! Soon we will be filming and we just want to say thanks in advance for your support in thinking about what children can wear! We have some interesting items already!
Included too are some shots of our endurance running we do regularly as part of our well being and health everyday.

Autumn holidays are done and dusted, and after one week of Term 2 we are back in business! It's great to see everyone settling into their learning programme so quick, even with a smile. We have began the term with a visit from the NZ Army Band which was great as students (and maybe some teachers) got to dance and hear music from instruments they wouldn't have really heard before. This term, we are mixing up the learning with fitness experiences, art and computational thinking to name a few. Students definitely seem to be engaging in and enjoying all the learning. Let's keep up the good mahi!
Photos are of art displays from last term, some newspapers studies, maths, giving clear instructions to a robot to follow and the visit from the army band.

We have had a brilliant start to the year, establishing our Routines and Expectations that have allowed us to begin our learning programmes. One thing Harakeke learners love is literacy, be it reading or writing but what we have found out, is that they all love a good story being read to them. Here, all teachers are doing their bit to tap into their passion and open their minds to the imagery of the story and prompt discussion points.
With our Value of Excellence a focus, we have noticed that during this storytelling time, everyone is an active listener and are positively engaged with the story, responding to questions or asking their own.

Celebrating Science!
This has been our major focus as we started Term 4. We spent the first two weeks finalising our Inquiry from Term 3 and then shared our epic learning with everyone on Friday.
We had a range of student-led inquiries being show cased, from 'Ice Fishing' to 'Water Melon Dye' and 'Coca-Cola Sherbet Fizz'. Students were extremely proud of their mahi and were delighted to be able to share their learning with others from around the school.

Tēnā koe Harakeke has got off to an exciting start to Term 3. This term our Inquiry is focusing on Science, more specifically 'Material World' where we're carrying out a range of exciting experiments. Harakeke kaiako have set up four great experiments to 'hook' the students in before students then dive deeper into smaller experiments and learn about the processes and technical vocabulary that relate to each experiment. |

Every Friday in Team Harakeke you will see us participating in PEEC (Positive Education Enhanced Curriculum) lessons. Lately we've had a focus on emotions and how these emotions link to the Red and Green brain. We've been talking about what strategies we can use to move from the Red brain into the Green brain.
Take a look at some of the posters we created that show the different emotions we experience during school time - see if you can identify what emotions would be Green brain, and what emotions would be Red brain.

Talofa Last week Team Harakeke participated in the School Cross Country. The year 4 and 5 students had their race down at Latimer Square where they needed to run either 2 or 3 laps. Our year 3 students ran their race back at school around the new buildings. All students did extremely well and persevered through the pain to show great grit and determination. We wish the students who placed in the top 3 for year 4 and 5 all the best for their next race the Eastern Zones competition. |

Kia ora koutou Sustainability is our major theme for our Inquiry this term. Team Harakeke are thinking about this theme and relating it to Nature. We've spent the last three weeks unpacking four key aspects - Forests, Pests, Endangered Animals and Human Impact and how these aspects relate to Sustainability. We were fortunate enough to go to Victoria Park participate in a Christchurch City Council led lesson focusing on 'Native Nurturing - Manaaki Whenua' which reinforced the four aspects we're unpacking. This was an excellent trip with practical activities that the students really enjoyed. Our next step is for students to pick one of the aspects they're most interested in and dig deeper with it. Watch this space to see how the inquiries turn out! |

Near the end of March students were given opportunity to spend a morning/afternoon in town walking around the Christchurch Museum discovering new facts about, exploring the Botanical Gardens and most importantly visiting the Rekindle Workshop. This visit to Rekindle will be followed up with 1 hour lessons at the end of this term where students will learn how to make string out out ti kouka (cabbage tree) leaves. We all loved getting out of the classroom and travelling to different sites and exploring the resources available to us locally.

Kia ora koutou Harakeke teachers and students have had a great first week in the classroom. All four classes have spent time getting to know each other completing team building activities, art activities, quizzes and much much more! We've also spent a lot of time unpacking out team whakatauki: waiho i te toipoto, kaua i te toiroa. Which translates to: Friendships should be kept alive. Students have unpacked this in-depth and discussed the importance of strong friendships and how to make new friendships, which is especially important at the moment as many of us are in new classrooms with new students and teachers. Have a look at what we've been up to so far through out the four classes - you'll notice one of the school values 'Excellence' is really on display already, students are setting the standard high early on. |

Kia orana!
Over the past two weeks, Team Harakeke have been lucky to have Mrs Takle join them for maths. Mrs Takle is some what of an Maths expert and is sharing her knowledge and wisdom with both students and teachers to help us be more capable and confident mathematicians.
One of the key concepts Mrs Takle is unpacking with us is using a DMIC approach to our learning programme where collaborative approaches to solving mathematics problems are being encouraged. We use a variety of 'Talk moves' to communicate our thinking and ensure we're all on the same page on how to solve the problem.
Take a look at some of the problems we've used in class!

Talofa lava. Inquiry learning has been the main focus in Team Harakeke over the past few weeks. Students have had a focus about Journeys and have explored different types of journeys such as animal migration, expeditions, journeys for travel and journeys to accomplish goals and achievements. Throughout the four classes, students have all viewed the inquiry through different lenses and this shows with the individual inquiries students have selected. We have students learning more about personal journeys of growth, historical journeys, famous expeditions and destinations we can travel to for Holidays such as Hawaii. Students are sharing their learning in a variety of ways. E.g. Minecraft recreating Jean Batten's plane, world maps with Ozbots to demonstrate the journey taken, slideshow presentations unpacking more information about their selected inquiry and incredible posters. |

Kia ora e te whānau, Harakeke team have been lucky enough to have Art lessons with Andrea over the past couple of weeks. Andrea is an Art EXPERT and has been sharing her wisdom and knowledge with us. Each class is split into two groups and gets a 45min session learning new drawing, shading and colouring techniques. We get to use a variety of media to create some epic art! Check it out to the right! |

Kia ora whānau Who can believe that it's already 5 fantastic weeks down and there's only 6 to go?! We have packed so much in already, and students are producing some epic learning. A popular highlight for our team each week is Team Singing. We're fortunate enough to work with Matua Sonny each fortnight on a Tuesday. Last week we learnt the correct formation to sing waiata and then played some fun games. Sonny and Tui definitely know how to tell a great story and make learning fun! We're really excited to get to each session and can't wait until it's our turn again. Next week see's the whole school visiting Aqua Gym for daily swimming lessons. We're excited to check out the newly upgraded venue and master our technique. Check in soon for some action shots! |

A successful but busy term we've had here in Harakeke Team. We started the term off with Athletics where several of our students did really well and went off to represent Christchurch East School at Zones Athletics.
We've also had Kapa Haka and Choir practices and trips too!
One of our favourite events from the term would have to be the Outdoor Education day! This was a whole day out of the class rotating around teachers taking a variety of different activities, such as cooking pikelets on 'hobo stoves', making Bivvies out of tarpaulins, putting up tents, obstacle courses and much much more! It was such a great day, and we were lucky to do all of this before the big storm arrived - such awesome timing by Ms Kent!!
As well as all of these extra learning curricula activities, we've been forging ahead with some epic Inquiry learning focusing on unpacking the Maori Creation Myth and reinterpreting this myth and legend through art, drama and narrative writing.
Check out all of the photos from these events and more on our School Facebook Page.

During Term Three, Harakeke students have enjoyed learning more about their identity. We have taken this excitement and enthusiasm and have written Acrostic Poems with a twist. Students learnt how to write an Acrostic Poem about themselves. The poem needed to include information about their Identity, and information that wasn’t easily known. This required them to think deeply and peel the layers back to explain and share not just about their likes and dislikes, but their culture, their whānau, their background, and facts that make them who they are.
The students' poems are tremendous, and as a part of our Linc Ed Reporting, we’ve shared these home along with a SOLO Rubric helping to explain the level of thinking the students used for that specific piece of writing.
Below is a sample of our Harakeke Student’s work.
Enjoy!
