Welcome to the Christchurch East School Property Development page
The Board of Trustees created this page in December 2019 to provide access to any relevant information relating to our property development, being undertaken as part of the Christchurch Schools’ Education Renewal Programme.
This Ministry of Education-funded initiative will see considerable improvements made to our school buildings, which will more closely align with our aspirational Vision for Teaching and Learning.

Rebuild Slideshow - Keep up to date with our rebuild by watching this slideshow
The school has seen significant progress related to our building projects which includes:
- The demolition and removal of the old junior block, Room 1A and two rooms from the end of the admin block. As part of this process fencing has been installed to ensure the school is safe for students to return.
- A power, phone and security upgrade has been completed to support the school through the rebuild and to meet the needs of the new buildings.
- One of three new containers has been moved on site to provide storage for school equipment and furniture.
- Temporary toilets have been installed close to our junior classrooms.
Updates related to school operations:
- The junior gate closest to Barbadoes Street is still operational.
- The school carpark will now be used as the main entrance for students and will be coned off before and after school for pedestrian access only.
- The container closest to the carpark will be used as the school sport shed.
- The bike racks have been shifted beside the container sport shed.
- Due to our growing roll we have had a budget increase from $4 million to $6 million for the rebuild.
- This has increased the number of classrooms we are able to build from 8 learning spaces to 12 learning spaces (3 Classroom Blocks of Four Learning Spaces.)
- Stage One Timeline:
- This stage of the project is in the procurement process (Being tendered for by prospective building companies) through the Ministry of Education property team.
- Dependent on the successful tender/building company, it is anticipated that work on the buildings will start by April 2020.
- The completion of the 3 new classroom blocks is expected early 2021.
2019 Update
Christchurch East School Final Design Plans!
We are thrilled to share the final design for our schools upcoming redevelopment. The utmost care has been taken by our board and leadership team while planning the design of our new learning spaces to ensure the new buildings reinforce our values and the learning outcomes we want for our students.
Thank you to the school community and staff, it was wonderful to draw from your experience of our existing environment and to the students for your views on what you would like to see in the school. It’s very exciting that once our redevelopment is completed we will have three new buildings with 12 new teaching spaces that better represent our schools vision for education. We also look forward to the redesign of the administration block, structural strengthening of the multi-purpose hall, work to ensure the weather tightness of the tech block and upgrading of school infra-structure. The redevelopment of Christchurch East School will create more enjoyable spaces for all of our students and the final designs show the transformation of our schools learning environments. With a redevelopment of this size, exact timeframes can change slightly throughout, but immediate key stages include the demolition of block 1 (old junior block) and block 9 (Room 1A/Music Block) during the end of year term break and laying of the foundations for three new blocks in the first half of 2020.
Our staff already work in a collaborative way with one another and they are delighted that the new learning environments will be created to support the range of teaching and learning approaches at our school. As we enter the building development phase all steps will be taken to achieve minimal disruption to our schools operations to help ensure students’ education is not affected during the redevelopment. We will keep you regularly informed throughout.

2018 Update
This year alone, our Board and Staff have engaged with the school community through a variety of approaches:
MLE, FLE, FLS, ILE!
The new spaces are called by a number of different acronyms. MLE stands for ‘Modern Learning Environment’, FLE stands for ‘Flexible Learning Environment’, FLS stands for ‘Flexible Learning Spaces’ and ILE stands for ‘Innovative Learning Environment.’ Environment refers to everything that happens in this space, including physical, social and academic aspects, while the term space refers to the physical space that is part of the learning environment.
In response to parent requests, we have included some of the documentation and research articles that the school and Board are using to inform decisions made both during and beyond this process:
Relating to building changes from the Ministry of Education; the MoE has a number of informative sites, with additional links to publications that can help people to develop their understandings of both the types of spaces, and the teaching and learning and social interactions that happen in these spaces:
this is not an exhaustive list, but highlights some of the reasons behind decisions made around teaching and learning:
